Why Choose Classical Guitar for Your Wedding?
Mar 21, 2024
Okay, so I will admit it - I am probably biased. Though I do truly believe classical guitar is an excellent musical choice for weddings. Based on my experience, there are a number of reasons why classical guitar is such a great choice. Before I talk about why you might want to consider hiring a classical guitarist for your wedding, we need to start with:
What is a Classical Guitar?
It is important to understand that "classical" guitar refers to the type of instrument, not necessarily the style of music that the instrument provides. A classical guitar is a nylon stringed instrument, as opposed to its family members the acoustic steel string and steel string electric. The guitar has a long history, and ancestors of modern day guitar can be traced back for well over 500 years. There were even guitar-like instruments in ancient Egypt. Perhaps the guitar was misnamed? "Classic" guitar might be a more appropriate name. If you think of a classic movie or classic car, the word "classic" refers to the time tested value of an object or experience. These classic items have been around for a long while, and universally accepted as "classic" in value. This is the case with the classical guitar. The design of the physical instrument itself actually precedes the acoustic steel string and electric guitar, and these latter instruments are the children of the classical guitar. Classical guitar is also often referred to as the Spanish guitar. A flamenco guitar is similar to a classical guitar, has nylon strings and a thinner top than a classical guitar. The Musical Versatility of the Classical Guitar
My point with giving this background is to illustrate the fact that many styles of music sound great on the classical guitar. The nylon strings create a warm quality in the treble, and provide a strong supportive bass. Classical music, arrangements of your favorite pop songs, rock songs and jazz tunes all sound amazing on the instrument. I have even written and played classical guitar arrangements of famous country songs for many weddings. If you have a special song that you danced to on your first date, or is special to you in any way, there is a good chance that it can be arranged for classical guitar. The classical guitar can sound like it is actually singing the beautiful melody that you love. It can also sound full and rich like an orchestra or band with the sound of chords and bass supporting the melody. In this way, the classical guitar can sound like multiple instruments playing all at one time.I invite you to check out the media samples on my website to get a taste of the sound of the classical guitar:
